Scripture: Psalm 42:5-11

5 Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God6 My soul is downcast within me; therefore I will remember you from the land of the Jordan, the heights of Hermon—from Mount Mizar. 7 Deep calls to deep in the roar of your waterfalls; all your waves and breakers have swept over me. 8 By day the Lord directs his love, at night his song is with me—a prayer to the God of my life. 9 I say to God my Rock, “Why have you forgotten me? Why must I go about mourning, oppressed by the enemy?” 10 My bones suffer mortal agony as my foes taunt me, saying to me all day long, “Where is your God?”11 Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God.

1. Reflect and Recall

A. Reflect (v.5)

Why are you feeling down?

We need to seriously talk to ourselves and honestly confront ourselves.

When bad things happen, and bad days come:

  • Don’t get angry with God and blame Him
  • Don’t dwell in self-pity and entertain negative thoughts
  • Don’t stay down in the valley of despair and discouragement
  • Do rise up, look up to God and link up with Him
B. Recall (v.1-3)

Who is God to you? Who are you to Him? What has He done for your before?

1 As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, my God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go and meet with God? My tears have been my food day and night, while people say to me all day long, “Where is your God?” These things I remember as I pour out my soul: how I used to go to the house of God under the protection of the Mighty One with shouts of joy and praise among the festive throng. (Psa. 42:1-3)

2. Remind and Repeat

A. Remind

What will God do for you now?

  • He will be with you (Heb. 13:5-6)
  • He will deliver you (Eph. 3:20)
  • He will help you (Matt. 28:20)
B. Repeat

What must I do?

  • Put your hope in God (vv.5, 11)
  • Tell yourself always – “I will put my hope in God. I will trust in Him completely. I will walk by faith and not by sight. I will believe Him for my miracles. I will not live in doubt and unbelief.”

3. Reset and Respond

A. Reset (vv. 5, 11)

Who is your hope?

  • Your Saviour and Your God!
  • Hope >>> Cope

1 God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in troubleTherefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, 3 though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging. (Psa. 46:1-3)

For this God is our God for ever and ever; he will be our Guide even to the end (until we die). (Psa. 48:14)

Call on me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you will honor and glorify me.” (Psalm 50:15)

B. Respond (vv. 5, 11)

What is your response to God?

  • You will Praise and Thank Him (not murmur and complain) even when your prayers have not been answered yet.
  • You will Adore Him, Worship Him, Serve Him
  • You will Delight yourself in Him and Share about Him and His goodness
  • You will continue to Pray and Wait on Him

But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary; they will walk and not be faint. (Isa. 40:31)

So do not fear, for I am with you, do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. (Isa. 41:10)

What must you do when you are down in the dumps?

  1. Pur your hope in God and trust Him always.
  2. Praise and worship Him always.
