Scripture: James 1:2-4

2 Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, 3 because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. 4 Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.

Church Theme for 2020: Have Faith in God

3 Things God is Doing Here

1. God is Refining our Faith (v.3)

  1. We have a measure of faith
  2. We have an enemy
  3. We have a test to take

To prove that our faith in God is true and genuine, it must be put to the test. As fire is used to refine gold and silver, so will crisis and difficulties in life be used to refine our faith in God.

In all this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials. These have come so that the proven genuineness of your faith—of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire—may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed. (1 Pet 1:6-7)

Refiner’s Fire by Brian Doerksen

Purify my heart
Let me be as gold and precious silver
Purify my heart
Let me be as gold, pure gold

Refiner’s fire
My heart’s one desire
Is to be holy
Set apart for You, Lord
I choose to be holy
Set apart for You, my Master
Ready to do Your will

2. God is Developing Perseverance in Us (v.3)

Why is He doing that for? With perseverance, we will:

  • not give up no matter how tough, difficult and terrible life on earth can be
  • continue to trust Him and live life with no regrets
  • remain faithful to Him to the end
  • surrender our will to Him and submit to His Lordship

12 Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold13 but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved. 14 And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come. (Matt 24:12-14)

“His master replied, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness!’ (Matt 25:21)

Those who endure to the end will hear Him say,

“Well done, good and faithful servant! Come and share your master’s happiness!’ (Matthew 25:21)

and not

“Depart from me, you evildoers. I never knew you.” (Matthew 7:23)

3. God is Maturing Us (v.4)

Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. (v.4)

God is maturing you so that you will BE what He wants you to be and DO what He wants you to do.

A mature believer will:

  • pray and believe and not doubt (1:6)
  • persevere under trial and receive the crown of life (1:12)
  • guard his heart against temptation (1:13-18)
  • be quick to listen, slow to speak, slow to anger (1:19)
  • hear the Word and do what it says (1:22)
  • look after orphans and widows (1:27)
  • keep himself from being polluted by the world (1:27)
  • not show favouritism (2:1–13)
  • show his faith by his works (2:14–26)
  • tame the tongue (3:1–12)
  • walk in godly wisdom and understanding (3:13–18)
  • not be quarrelsome (4:1–3)
  • not be unfaithful to God (4:4)
  • be submissive and humble (4:5–10)
  • not be slanderous (4:11–12)
  • not be boastful (4:13–17)
  • not be oppressive (5:1–6)
  • be patient in suffering (5:7–11)
  • not swear (5:12)
  • pray in faith (5:13–18)
  • turn a sinner from the error of their way (5:19–20)

We are overcomers in Christ and through every trial and difficulty, we will grow from faith to faith, from strength to strength, and from victory to victory.

What the devil intended for evil, God can turn it for good – for His glory and honour.

And we know that in all things (good or bad) God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. (Rom 8:28)

Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? (Rom 8:35)

37 No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. 38 For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, 39 neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Rom 8:37-39)

Whatever is happening now, may not look good, but don’t get upset with God. He knows what He is doing.

He is refining our Faith, developing perseverance in us and maturing us.

  • Let God have His way in your life.
  • Let Him do whatever is needed to make you strong in faith.
  • Worship Him joyfully in spirit and in truth.
  • Be prepared for His soon coming
  • Be prepared for a harvest of souls.
  • Trust Him completely for your miracle.
