Scripture: 1 Tim. 4:12-16

Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in life, in love, in faith and in purity. Until I come, devote yourself to the public reading of Scripture, to preaching and to teaching. Do not neglect your gift, which was given you through a prophetic message when the body of elders laid their hands on you. Be diligent in these matters; give yourself wholly to them, so that everyone may see your progress. Watch your life and doctrine closely. Persevere in them, because if you do, you will save both yourself and your hearers.

If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated Me first. If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world. That is why the world hates you. (John 15:18-19)

Christian = Christianos (Χριστιανος)

ianos = a slave of a household
an adherent of a person or party
a follower of the Way, the Truth, the Life

When words are many, sin is not absent, but he who holds his tongue is wise. (Pro. 10:19)

For dreams [nightmares] come with many cares, and a fool’s voice with many words. (Ecc. 5:3)

7In everything set them an example by doing what is good. In your teaching show integrity, seriousness 8and soundness of speech that cannot be condemned, so that those who oppose you may be ashamed because they have nothing bad to say about us. (Titus 2:7-8)

16Therefore I urge you to imitate me. 17For this reason I am sending to you Timothy, my son whom I love, who is faithful in the Lord. He will remind you of my way of life in Christ Jesus, which agrees with what I teach everywhere in every church. (1 Cor. 4:16-17)

1. Watch Your Life

Watch: epecho (επεχε)

  • pay close attention
  • set proper safeguards
  • stay alert; be extra vigilant
  • Watch yourself (ESV, HCSB, NASB, NRSV)
  • Watch your life (NIV, NCV)
  • Watch how you live (NLT)
  • Watch your development (CEB)
  • Watch your character (The Message)

A. Watch Your Character

i. Person – The Real You

…that God would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be  strengthened with might through His Spirit in the inner man… (Eph. 3:16, NKJV)

Even though our outward man is perishing, yet the inward man is being renewed day by day. (2 Cor. 4:16, NKJV)

The natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; nor can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned. But he who is spiritual judges all things. (1 Cor. 2:14-15, NKJV)

I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me. (Gal. 2:20, NKJV)

I affirm, by the boasting in you which I have in Christ Jesus our Lord, I die daily. (1 Cor. 15:31, NKJV)

ii. Personality

Danger: Being jealous

3Do nothing from rivalry or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. 4Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. (Phi. 2:3-4)

Danger: Being careless in speech

And besides they learn to be idle, wandering about from house to house, and not only idle but also gossips and busybodies, saying things which they ought not. (1 Tim. 4:13)

For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good things, and an evil man out of the evil treasure brings forth evil things. (Matt. 12:34-35)

Danger: Being insubordinate

Remember those who rule over you, who have spoken the word of God to you, whose faith follow, considering the outcome of their conduct. (Heb. 13:7)

Obey those who rule over you, and be submissive, for they watch out for your souls, as those who must give account. Let them do so with joy and not with grief, for that would be unprofitable for you. (Heb. 13:17)

Danger: Being divisive

11For it has been declared to me concerning you, my brethren… that there are contentions among you. 12Now I say this, that each of you says, “I am of Paul,” or “I am of Apollos,” or “I am of Cephas,” or “I am of Christ.” 13Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Or were you baptized in the name of Paul? (1 Cor. 1:11-13)

If anyone destroys God’s Temple, God will destroy him. For God’s Temple is holy, and you are that Temple. (1 Cor. 3:17)

B. Watch Your Conduct

i. Your Attitudes

5Have this mind… which is yours in Christ Jesus, 6who, though He was… God, did not count equality with God… 7but made Himself nothing, taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, 8He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. (Phi. 2:5-8)

If anyone would be first, he must be last of all and servant of all. (Mark 9:34)

ii. Your Actions

In everything set them an example by doing what is good. (Titus 2:7)

The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, because He has anointed Me to preach the Gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed. (Luke 4:18)

But someone will say, “You have faith and I have works.” Show me your faith apart from your works, and I will show you my faith by my works. (James 2:18)

22Be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. 23For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks intently at his natural face in a mirror. 24For he looks at himself and goes away and at once forgets what he was like. (James 1:22-24)

Let ALL that you do be done in love. (1 Cor. 16:14)

2. Watch Your Doctrine

A. Watch Your Convictions
  1. What you believe

But you have an anointing from the Holy One, and you know all things. (1 John 2:20)

  2. Why you believe
B. Watch Your Communications
  1. What you say
  2. How you say
  3. Why you say

Conclusion and Challenge

Talk is Cheap

  • Don’t just talk, act.
  • Don’t just say, show.
  • Don’t just promise, deliver.

Actions speak louder than words.
