Scripture: Psa 118:8

”It is better to trust in the Lord than to put confidence in man“ (NKJV)

”It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in humans“ (NIV)

1. Be Careful in What / Who You Trust

Don’t put your trust in:

A. Riches
  • Not permanent
  • In the blink of an eye wealth disappears, for it will sprout wings and fly away like an eagle.” (Pro. 23:5)
B. Man
  • Their help is temporal and unreliable
  • Do not put your trust in princes, in human beings, who cannot save. When their spirit departs, they return to the ground; on that very day their plans come to nothing.” (Psa. 146:3-4)

Trust in yourself, and you are doomed to disappointment; trust in your friends, and they will die and leave you; trust in reputation, and some slanderous tongue may blast it; but trust in God, and you are never to be confounded in time or in eternity.” ~ D. L. Moody

2. Be Wise to Trust In God Alone

Trust means we believe in God and rely on His promises no matter what the circumstances are – good or bad.

Trust is:

  • assured reliance on the character, ability, strength or truth of someone or something.
  • One in which confidence is placed in

(Merriam Webster Dictionary)

The Blessings of Trust

”Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.” (Pro. 3:5-6)

  1. Understand all things through God (v.5)
    • Look at things with His wisdom and perception
  2. Commit all things to God (v.6)
    • Receives the quiet confidence that He will work out things for our good.
  3. Receive good from God (v.6)
    • Acceptance of His choice, His will and His leading will bring blessed fruitfulness into our lives

The Requirements of Trust

1. Trust demands Submission and Patience
  • His ways, not our ways
  • His wisdom far above ours
  • For you have need of endurance, so that when you have done the will of God, you may receive what was promised.” (Heb 10:36)
2. Trust requires Obedience
  • Obedience brings blessings
  • However, many believers’ downfall due to unwillingness to obey
  • Results in hardening of heart against God’s ways
  • Reaps painful consequences

Asa, the third King of Judah (2 Chro 14-16)

  • Began his reign with implicit trust in God (2 Chro 14:11)
  • Received a prophecy of warning (2 Chro 15:1-2)
  • Ended his reign with rebellion against God (2 Chro 16:7-9)
  • never repented
  • developed a serious foot disease three years after the prophecy
  • did not seek the Lord’s help but turned only to his physicians
  • died in the forty-first year – with a disease physically and also spiritually
