Outline:

  1. Grace: God’s Initiative
  2. Grace: Our Response

1. Grace: God’s Initiative

A. God’s Grace: Charis (NT word, Greek)

His Provision of salvation : God taking the initiative to save sinners who could never save themselves from the stronghold of sin

  • bondage of Satan
  • eternal damnation of hell

“For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Rom 6:23)

Extending His Grace on sinful man by sending His Son to die and reconciling man to Himself and to spend eternity in heaven:

“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16)

“He is so rich in kindness and grace that he purchased our freedom with the blood of his Son and forgave our sins” (Eph 1:7)

GRACEGod’s Redemption At Christ’s Expense

GRACEGod’s Riches At Christ’s Expense

B. God’s Grace: Chesed (OT word, Hebrew)

His lovingkindness towards man: enablement, daily guidance, preservation, etc

His character attests to this:

“The Lord, the Lord, the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness, maintaining love to thousands, and forgiving wickedness, rebellion and sin…”

He Giveth More Grace

He giveth more grace when the burdens grow greater,
He sendeth more strength when the labours increase;
To added afflictions He addeth His mercy,
To multiplied trials, His multiplied peace.

Chorus:

His love has no limits, His grace has no measure,
His power no boundary known unto men;
For out of His infinite riches in Jesus
He giveth, and giveth, and giveth again.

2. Grace: Our Response

Experiencing God’s Grace should produce good results

1. Gratitude of a changed life:
  • Paul: from a persecutor to the Apostle to the Gentiles (his testimony in 1 Cor 15:9-10)
  • John Newton : from a slave trader to a clergyman who wrote the hymn, “Amazing Grace”
2. Obedience

Quote: “God’s Grace is not an excuse to sin but rather a reason to love and serve Him fully.”

  • To live in holiness

“So you must live as God’s obedient children. Don’t slip back into your old ways of living to satisfy your own desires. You didn’t know any better then. But now you must be holy in everything you do, just as God who chose you is holy. For the Scriptures say, “You must be holy because I am holy.” (1 Peter 1:14)

  • No unruly behaviour

“….  Or do you not know that wrongdoers will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor men who have sex with men nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.” (1 Cor. 9-11)

  • Live with no reservations towards God, His Kingdom and His Interest
  • Be open to the Lord, His Spirit’s leading and His Will
  • Example – Hudson Taylor, missionary to China

“China is not to be won for Christ by quiet, ease-loving men and women … The stamp of men and women we need is such as will put Jesus, China, [and] souls first and foremost in everything and at every time—even life itself must be secondary.”

3. Forgiveness
  • In receiving His Grace, we receive His forgiveness
  • Be gracious and forgive those who had done us wrong
  • Harbouring unforgiveness brings about: spiritual dryness; shame to the Lord and His Name & grieve the Holy Spirit

“And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave” you. (Eph 4:32)

Conclusion & Challenge

Having received God’s Grace, resolve to:

  1. Be grateful and keep maturing
  2. Be obedient and live holy lives
  3. Be forgiving and keep short accounts
