Scripture: Psalm 46:10

“Be still and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.”

To strive

  • to make great and strenuous efforts
  • to try very hard
  • to exert, struggle, contend, compete or fight vigorously
  • to strain, sweat and toil – to accomplish an end or to achieve something

Striving has to do with self-effort for self-glory = leads to dissatisfaction

To thrive

  • to flourish and grow vigorously
  • to prosper and gain wealth or possessions
  • to progress toward or realize a goal despite or because of circumstances and conflicts

(Merriam-Webster Dictionary)

“For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?” (Mark 8:36)

32 For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. 33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. 34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow…” (Matthew 6:32-34a)

1 God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. 2 Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, 3 though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging. 4 There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy place where the Most High dwells. 5 God is within her, she will not fall; God will help her at break of day. 6 Nations are in uproar, kingdoms fall; he lifts his voice, the earth melts. 7 The Lord Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress. 8 Come and see what the Lord has done, the desolations he has brought on the earth. 9 He makes wars cease to the ends of the earth. He breaks the bow and shatters the spear; he burns the shields with fire. 10 He says, “Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.11 The LORD Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress. (Psalm 46)

God’s command: Psa 46:10

2 Things God wants us to do:

1. Be still
  • Be weak, strop striving, cease your frantic going to and fro, be silent and rest

In silence and rest, you will

  1. Learn that God’s ways are not your ways
  2. Understand that God is in control
  3. Know who God is and what He can do

2. Know that He is God
  • He is powerful and above all
  • He is sovereign
  • He is in charge
  • He doesn’t need our permission or approval
  • He can do whatever He desires
  • He will be exalted

3 You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you. 4 Trust in the Lord forever, for the Lord, the Lord himself, is the Rock eternal. (Isaiah 26:3-4)

This is what the Sovereign Lord, the Holy One of Israel, says: “In repentance and rest is your salvation, in quietness and trust is your strength, but you would have none of it. (Isaiah 30:15)

Yet the Lord longs to be gracious to you; therefore he will rise up to show you compassion. For the Lord is a God of justice. Blessed are all who wait for him! (Isaiah 30:18)

Be Still My Soul – Kathrina von Schlegel, Jane Borthwick (1855)

Be still, my soul: the Lord is on thy side;
Bear patiently the cross of grief or pain.
Leave to thy God to order and provide;
In every change, He faithful will remain.
Be still, my soul: thy best, thy heavenly Friend
Through thorny ways leads to a joyful end.

Be still, my soul: thy God doth undertake
To guide the future, as He has the past.
Thy hope, thy confidence let nothing shake;
All now mysterious shall be bright at last.
Be still, my soul: the waves and winds still know
His voice Who ruled them while He dwelt below.

Be still, my soul: when dearest friends depart,
And all is darkened in the vale of tears,
Then shalt thou better know His love, His heart,
Who comes to soothe thy sorrow and thy fears.
Be still, my soul: thy Jesus can repay
From His own fullness all He takes away.

Be still, my soul: the hour is hastening on
When we shall be forever with the Lord.
When disappointment, grief and fear are gone,
Sorrow forgot, love’s purest joys restored.
Be still, my soul: when change and tears are past
All safe and blessèd we shall meet at last.

TRUST GOD for your deliverance and miracle.
