Scripture: Isa. 9:6-7

For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given; and the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the increase of His government and peace there will be no end, upon the throne of David and over His kingdom, to order it and establish it with judgment and justice from that time forward, even forever. The zeal of the Lord Of Hosts will perform this.

Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a Son, and shall call His name Immanuel. (Isa. 7:14)

So all this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying: “Behold, the Virgin shall be with Child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel which is translated, ‘God with us’” (Matt. 1:22-23)

And we have something more sure, the prophetic word, to which you will do well to pay attention… knowing this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture comes from someone’s own interpretation. For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit. (2 Pet. 1:19-21)

The Bible is:

  • Inerrant (without errors)
  • Infallible (totally reliable)
  • Immutable (never changes)

I. Unto Us, a Child is Born

A. He was born  of the Virgin Mary

“Behold the maidservant of the Lord! Let it be to me according to your word.” (Luke 1:38)

“Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take to you Mary your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name JESUS, for He will save His people from their sins. So all this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying: ‘Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel,’ which is translated, ‘God with us.’ Then Joseph, being aroused from sleep, did as the angel of the Lord commanded him and took to him his wife, and did not know her till she had brought forth her firstborn Son. And he called His name JESUS.” (Matt. 1:20-25)

B. He was Made Flesh and Dwelt Among Us
  1. The Old Testament Reality

  2. The New Testament Reality

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. (John 1:1-2)

…the Word became flesh and dwelt among us… (John 1:14a)

… Christ Jesus, who, though He was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but made Himself nothing, taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men… (Phi. 2:5b-7)

hypostatic union

For in Him the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily. (Col. 2:9)

Every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is of God, and every spirit that does not confess that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is not of God. And this is the spirit of the Antichrist, which you have heard was coming, and is now already in the world. (1 John 4:2-3)

For many deceivers have gone out into the world who do not confess Jesus Christ as coming in the flesh. This is a deceiver and an antichrist. (2 John 7)

For there is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus. (1 Tim. 2:5)

For [God] made [Christ] who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him. (2 Cor. 5:21)

  1. The ongoing reality

II. Unto Us, a Son is Given

You see… when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous man, though for a good man someone might possibly dare to die. But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. (Rom. 5:6-8)

For God SO loved… that He gave His only begotten Son… (John 3:16)

monogenes – I and my Father are ONE.

God who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things? (Rom. 8:32)

A. God Gives Graciously

God has blessed us with every spiritual blessing… in Christ, just as He chose us… having predestined us to adoption as sons by Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the good pleasure of His will… by which He has made us accepted in the Beloved. In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace which He made to abound toward us… according to His good pleasure. (Eph. 1:3-5)

B. God Gives Generously

If you, then, though you are evil (imperfect humans), know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask Him! (Matt 7:11)

Until now you have not asked for anything in My name. Ask and you will receive, and your joy will be complete. (John 16:24)

You want something but don’t get it. You kill and covet, but you cannot have what you want. You quarrel and fight. You do not have, because you do not ask God. When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures. (James 4:2-3)

… according to the riches of His grace which He made to abound toward us… according to His good pleasure. (Eph. 1:9)

Delight yourself also in the Lord, and He shall give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the Lord, trust also in Him, and He shall bring it to pass. (Psa. 37:4-5)

III. Unto God, We Come

  1. Mary came and gave herself
  2. Joseph came and obeyed implicitly
  3. Shepherds came and witness for Jesus
  4. Magi came and gave gifts to Jesus

Let us now go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has come to pass, which the Lord has made known to us. And they came with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the Babe lying in a manger. Now when they had seen Him, they made widely known the saying which was told them concerning this Child. And all those who heard it marvelled at those things which were told them by the shepherds. (Luke 2:15-18)

Where is He who has been born King of the Jews? For we have seen His star in the East and have come to worship Him. (Matt. 2:2)

…being divinely warned in a dream that they should not return to Herod, they departed for their own country another way. (Matt. 2:12)
