Scripture: Colossians 2:9-15

9 For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form, 10and you have been given fullness in Christ, who is the head over every power and authority. 11 In him you were also circumcised, in the putting off of the sinful nature, not with a circumcision done by the hands of men but with the circumcision done by Christ, 12 having been buried with him in baptism and raised with him through your faith in the power of God, who raised him from the dead. 13 When you were dead in your sins and in the uncircumcision of your sinful nature, God made you alive with Christ. He forgave us all our sins, 14 having canceled the written code, with its regulations, that was against us and that stood opposed to us; he took it away, nailing it to the cross. 15 And having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross.

Thrust: God is pleased to have the fullness of Deity dwell bodily in Christ  so that we can be made complete in Christ spiritually.

1. Christology 101

in Him all the fullness of Deity dwells in bodily form (v.9)

Background of Epistle:

  • Infiltration of Judaism
  • Incipience of Gnosticism

  • Supremacy of the Law
  • Superiority of Circumcision

“Unless you are circumcised according to the custom of Moses, you cannot be saved.” (Acts 15:1)

“It is necessary to circumcise them, and to command them to keep the Law of Moses.” (Acts 15:5)

“Now therefore, why do you test God by putting a yoke on the neck of the disciples which neither our fathers nor we were able to bear? But we believe that through the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ we shall be saved in the same manner as they.” (Acts 15:10-11)

  • Elevation of knowledge
  • Error of Emanation
A.In Him

“I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself up for me.” (Gal 2:20)

B. All the Fullness of Deity

15 He is the image of the invisible God, the Firstborn over ALL creation. 16 For by Him ALL things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. ALL things were created through Him and for Him. 17 And He is before ALL things, and in Him ALL things consist. 18 And He is the Head of the Body, the Church, who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in ALL things He may have the preeminence. 19 For it pleased the Father that in Him ALL the fullness should dwell, 20 and by Him to reconcile ALL things to Himself, by Him, whether things on earth or things in heaven, having made peace through the blood of His cross.” (Col 1:15-20)

i. Image of Invisible God

“For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse.…” (Rom 1:20)

“Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, to God who alone is wise, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen.…” (1 Tim 1:17)

“God spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets, has in these last days spoken… by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the worlds; who being the brightness of His glory and the express image of His person, and upholding all things by the word of His power.…” (Heb 1:1-3)

No one has seen the Father except the One who is from God; only He has seen the Father. (John 14:9)

ii. Firstborn of All Creation

Prototokos (προτοτοκος)

  1. Something / someone that’s first in order of time, e.g. a firstborn child
  2. Someone who’s preeminent in rank
  3. Someone who is both firstborn and preeminent in rank

A. You have been made complete

“To them God willed to make known what are the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles: which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.” (Col 1:27)

“And other sheep I have which are not of this fold (Israelites); them (Gentiles) also I must bring… and there will be ONE FLOCK and ONE SHEPHERD.” (John 10:16)

“I do not pray for these (the 11 Apostles) alone, but also for those who will believe in Me through their word (the Gentiles, i.e., you and me).” (John 17:20)

B. He is Head over all Rule

3. Christian Practicum 101
