Scripture: Luke 11:1-4; Matt 6:9b-13

9bOur Father in heaven, hallowed be Your name. 10Your Kingdom come. Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. 11Give us this day our daily bread. 12And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. 13And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one. For Yours is the Kingdom and the Power and the Glory forever. Amen.

Part 1: Godward Prayer

  • Sanctity of God’s Name
  • Advancement of God’s Kingdom
  • Fulfilment of God’s Will

Part 2: Manward Prayer

  • Man’s Needs
  • Man’s Petition
  • Man’s Response

1. Petition 1: Give Us This Day Our Daily Bread

A. Give us
  • Acknowledge we’re a needy people
  • Adopt humble posture before God to supplicate
B. This day
  • Denotes currency of prayer
  • Focuses on day-to-day living
C. Our daily bread
  • Context: daily bread = provision of physical needs
  • Coverage: health & appetite, i.e. nourishment

“For everything God created is good and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving because it is consecrated by the word of God and prayer.” (1 Tim 4:4-5)

“Give me neither poverty nor riches but give me only my daily bread. Otherwise, I may have too much and disown You and say, ‘Who is the Lord?’ Or I may become poor and steal, and so dishonour the name of my God.” (Pro 30:8-9)

“And if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that.” (1 Tim 6:8)

Petition 2: Forgive Us Our Debts As We Forgive Our Debtors

“So also My heavenly Father will do to every one of you, if you do not forgive your brother from your heart.” (Matt 18:35, RSV)

“NOT seven times, but seventy-seven times.” (Mt 18:22, NIV)

“NOT seven times, but seventy times seven.” (Mt 18:22, RSV)

“If anyone slays Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold.” (Gen 4:24, RSV)

“Who is a God like You, who pardons sin?” (Mic 7:18)

“I knew that You are a gracious and compassionate God, slow to anger and abounding in love.” (Jon 4:2)

“For if you forgive men when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.” (Matt 6:14-15)

“Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.” (Eph 4:32)

“Her sins, which are many, are forgiven; for she loved much.” (Luke 7:36-50, RSV)

Petition 3: Lead Us Not Into Temptations

“When tempted, no one should say, ‘God is tempting me.’ For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does He tempt anyone.” (Jas 1:13)

“The woman YOU put here with me—SHE gave me some fruit from the tree, and I ate it.” (Gen 3:12)

Our Responsibility towards Temptation
  • Avoid people and places that entice us to sin
  • Resist the Tempter
  • Go to God for grace swiftly and submissively

“Keep Your servant also from wilful sins; may they not rule over me. Then will I be blameless, innocent of great transgression.” (Ps 19:13)

“Avoid (abstain) from every kind (form) of evil.” (1 Th 5:22, NIV (NKJV))

“Quick! Catch all the little foxes before they ruin the vineyard of Your love, for the grapevines are all in blossom.” (Song 2:15, NLT)

“For God is working in you, giving you the desire to obey Him and the power to do what pleases Him.” (Phi 2:13, NLT)

Petition 4: Deliver Us From the Evil One

Nature of Requests for Supply of Need
  • Providing grace (give us)
  • Pardoning grace (forgive us)
  • Preventing grace (lead us not to temptation)
  • Preserving grace (deliver us)

And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints. (Eph 6:18)

For if you live according to the sinful nature, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live. (Rom 8:13)

Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed. (Col 3:5)

My prayer is not that You take them out of the world but that You protect them from the evil one. (Jn 17:15)

But remember that the temptations that come into your life are no different from what others experience. And God is faithful. He will keep the temptation from becoming so strong that you can’t stand up against it. When you are tempted, he will show you a way out so that you will not give in to it. (1 Cor 10:13, NLT)

Doxology: For Yours is the Kingdom and the Power and the Glory Forever. Amen.

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ! (Eph 1:3)

Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. (Phi 4:6)

Continue in prayer, and watch in the same with thanksgiving. (Col 4:2, KJV)

And blessed be His glorious name forever! And let the whole earth be filled with His glory. Amen and Amen.(Ps 72:19)
