Scripture: 2 Chro 20:1-30

1 After this, the Moabites and Ammonites with some of the Meunites came to wage war against Jehoshaphat. Some people came and told Jehoshaphat, “A vast army is coming against you from Edom, from the other side of the Dead Sea. It is already in Hazezon Tamar” (that is, En Gedi)…

3 The LORD was with Jehoshaphat because he followed the ways of his father David before him… 10The fear of the LORD fell on all the kingdoms of the lands surrounding Judah, so that they did not go to war against Jehoshaphat. (2 Chro 17:3, 10)

I. Set Your Face Towards the Lord and Seek Him (vv.3-4)

3 Then Jehoshaphat was afraid and set his face to seek the LORD, and proclaimed a fast throughout all Judah. 4 And Judah assembled to seek help from the LORD; from all the cities of Judah they came to seek the LORD. (2 Chro 20:3-4, ESV)

A. Resolve to Focus on God

B. Prepare to Encounter God

The LORD is far from the wicked [never even hears the prayers of the wicked (CEV)], but He hears the prayer of the righteous. (Proverbs 15:29)

“Go, gather together all the Jews who are in Susa, and fast for me. Do not eat or drink for three days, night or day. I and my attendants will fast as you do. When this is done, I will go to the king, even though it is against the law. And if I perish, I perish.” (Esther 4:16)

II. Bow Before the Lord and Worship Him (v.18)

14 “Then the Spirit of the Lord came on Jahaziel son of Zechariah, the son of Benaiah, the son of Jeiel, the son of Mattaniah, a Levite and descendant of Asaph, as he stood in the assembly.” 15 He said: “Listen, King Jehoshaphat and all who live in Judah and Jerusalem! This is what the LORD says to you: ‘Do not be afraid or discouraged because of this vast army. For the battle is not yours, but God’s. 16 Tomorrow march down against them. They will be climbing up by the Pass of Ziz, and you will find them at the end of the gorge in the Desert of Jeruel. 17 You will not have to fight this battle. Take up your positions; stand firm and see the deliverance the LORD will give you, Judah and Jerusalem. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged. Go out to face them tomorrow, and the LORD will be with you.’” 18 Jehoshaphat bowed down with his face to the ground, and all the people of Judah and Jerusalem fell down in worship before the LORD. (2 Chro 20:14-18)

A. Acknowledge His Presence

5 Then the LORD came down in the cloud and stood there with him and proclaimed his name, the LORD… 8 Moses bowed to the ground at once and worshiped. (Exo 34:5, 8)

29 [Moses] was not aware that his face was radiant because he had spoken with the LORD. 30 When Aaron and all the Israelites saw Moses, his face was radiant, and they were afraid to come near him. (Exo 34:29-30)

B. Surrender to His Plan

III. Step Out in the Lord and Praise Him (vv.20-21)

20 Early in the morning they left for the Desert of Tekoa. As they set out, Jehoshaphat stood and said, “Listen to me, Judah and people of Jerusalem! Have faith in the LORD your God and you will be upheld; have faith in his prophets and you will be successful.” 21 After consulting the people, Jehoshaphat appointed men to sing to the LORD and to praise him for the splendor of his holiness as they went out at the head of the army, saying:  “Give thanks to the LORD, for his love endures forever.”

A. Step Out with Faith in God

20 Yet he did not waver through unbelief regarding the promise of God but was strengthened in his faith and gave glory to God, 21 being fully persuaded that God had power to do what he had promised. (Rom 4:20-21)

B. Step Out with Praise for God
