Scripture: Luke 23:32-34

32 Two other men, both criminals, were also led out with him to be executed. 33 When they came to the place called the Skull, they crucified him there, along with the criminals—one on his right, the other on his left. 34 Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.” And they divided up his clothes by casting lots.

16For God so lovedthe world that He gaveHis one and only Son, that whoeverbelievesin him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but to savethe world through him. (John 3:16-17)

Sacrificial love at its finest, Radical forgiveness at its highest.

1. Father

  • a term of endearment and close relationship within a family unit
  1. God the Father was someone dear to Jesus’ heart.
  2. Today, this term of endearment can be confidently uttered when you:
    • know you belong to Him – God Almighty
    • respect and honor Him as someone worthy to be esteemed, adored and exalted
    • trust Him to do the right thing in and through your life

Abba Father is the cry of the Holy Spirit within you, testifying that you are a child of the living God (Romans 8:15; Galatians 4:6)

2. Forgive

  1. To stop blaming or being angry with someone for something wrong that person has done, or not punish them for something; to allow someone to not have to pay a debt (Cambridge Dictionary)
  2. Stop feeling angry or resentful towards (someone) or wish to punish (someone) for an offence, flaw, or mistake (Oxford Dictionary)
  3. To wipe the slate clean, to pardon, to cancel a debt; to give up my right to hurt you, for hurting me (AllaboutGod.com)

And forgive us our debts (trespasses, transgressions, sins), as we forgive our debtors. (Matthew 6:12)

3. Them

  • People then (Jews and Gentiles) – who rejected Him
  • Judas Iscariot – who betrayed Him
  • Disciples – who forsook Him
  • Religious Leaders – who were envious and jealous of Him
  • Pilate – who treated Him unjustly
  • Soldiers – who brutally tortured and killed Him
  • People now – You and me – whose sins sent Him to the cross

4. For They Don’t Know What They Do

  • NO. They knew the horrible and terrible things they have done
  • NO. We also know the wrong and wicked things we have done

17“Now, fellow Israelites, I know that you acted in ignorance, as did your leaders. 18But this is how God fulfilled what he had foretold through all the prophets, saying that his Messiah would suffer. (Acts 3:17-20)

None of the rulers of this age understood it, for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory. (1 Corinthians 2:8)

Even though I was once a blasphemer and a persecutor and a violent man, I was shown mercy because I acted in ignorance and unbelief. (1 Timothy 1:13)

What must we do?

19 Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord, 20 and that he may send the Messiah, who has been appointed for you—even Jesus. 21 Heaven must receive him until the time comes for God to restore everything, as he promised long ago through his holy prophets. (Acts 3:19-21)

God is merciful and He will forgive us.

A Divine Exchange took place on Calvary:

  • Your sin for His righteousness
  • Your punishment for His forgiveness
  • Your rejection for His acceptance
  • Your poverty for His abundance
  • Your curse for His blessing
  • Your shame for His glory
  • Your wound for His healing
  • Your death for His life
  • Your hell for His heaven

Good Friday reminds us of Jesus’ sacrificial love and radical forgiveness.

JESUS is the reason you can be blessed to be a blessing

Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus (Romans 8:1)

Accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior. Accept His gift of eternal life.

How? Repent of your sins and turn to GodThank Him for your salvation.

Present yourself to Him – as a living sacrifice – and let His will to be done in your life.
